In the subject of “Digital Design” in the fifth semester of my studies at the State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart, the semester task was to analyze folding mechanisms with paper. The principles of the chosen folding mechanism were then transferred to architecture. Using Rhinocerus and the program attachment “Grashopper” was designed parametrically. In the program, the geometry could be changed by correcting the parameters.
My chosen folding mechanism allowed me to fold my element. In doing so, triangular eyes open in the surface of the structure. An application for my mechanism was found quickly. As a temporary roof for public spaces, the folding mechanism is ideal.
In the next step, the new roof was laid over the main courtyard of the city palace in Mannheim.
