The scientific work gives the reader an overview of the use of German natural stones in architecture. The first part deals with the composition, origin, occurrence, degradation and architectural use, the basics of using stone as a building material. Based on six examples, the differences in the regional and supraregional use of German natural stones in the architecture are shown below and their significance analyzed. With a digression into architectural theory, perceptual psychology and the practice of urban coding, the insights gained are evaluated and finally potentials and risks in dealing with German natural stones in regional and supraregional architectural use are identified. The results of this work should make an active contribution to the discussion about the correct materiality in the cities.
